So far in 2010

This year has gotten off to a great start!

January….a Music of the Civil War Show with Rex Rideout

Denver Post – Feature Article by Bill Husted. Jan. 7.  Click here to read it!   http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_14135958

Arvada Center’s Colorado Cowboy Poetry Gathering, with Baxter Black, Sons of the San Joaquin, Wiley and the Wild West, and Michael Martin Murphey.   Among the highlights was spending time with the Australian Champion Bush Poet, Carol Huechan, and other Aussies Milton Taylor and Ruelee.

California Zephyr train ride to Elko, NV.   What a memorable trip!!!   Watch for photos coming soon!

Nat’l Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, NV.   The grand-daddy of them all, and it’s easy to see why!

I got to help lead the “Singalong Session” with Hal Cannon, RW Hampton, Andy Wilkinson and Andy Hedges, and Dave Bourne.   I was in a fun Yodeling Session with Wiley Gustafson, and 2  extremely talented  young ladies, Cora Wood and Brigid Reedy.  I was  the “lead mare” in a session called, “Across the Generations” with darling little Cora Wood, Adrian and Miss V, (the Gypsy Cowbelle)   It was a terrific session!!   The frosting on the cake was the great honor of being the Baxter Black’s Special Guest on his Saturday show.  What a thrill!!!   I think you  can still hear it on the www.westernfolklife.com

In addition to performing, I had so much fun in jam sessions and “vistin’ with kin.”  Elko is such a wonderful place for a reunion with the many wonderful friends I’ve been lucky to make over the last 28 years!!!

In March, I got to join Jean Prescott and Yvonne Hollenbeck, as the Sweethearts in Carhartts, at the South East Cowboy Gathering held at the magnificent Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, GA.

This is a world class art museum, and the friendliest folks you can imagine.  It was so good to hear the concert with Red Steagall.  Thanks to  Doc Stovall for all his hard work in making the festival so great!

I taught my Cowboy Songs and Western Yodeling classes at Swallow Hill School of Music, and had an enthusiastic bunch!

Barb-Wire Books in Longmont, CO is a new surprise on the Front Range scene.   Zeb Dennis organized a little “cowboy deal” with 6 of us sharing some songs and poems in this darling new independent book store. I was joined by my friends Al “Doc” Mehl, Vic Anderson, Rex Rideout and Lloyd Morris and Zeb Dennis.   We expected about 40 people, and when the calls started coming in, we had seats for 70. Imagine our delight when 230 people attended this first concert!  We were all blown away  by a surprise appearance by America’s favorite cowboys, Riders in the Sky!!!   They came straight from the airport and gave the audience a rare treat!!!   It was also Ranger Doug’s Birthday!!!

We’re going to do monthly cowboy concerts!!!  Visit www.barbedwirebooks.com

It’s Colorado Cowboy Poetry Gathering Time!

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

2010 is starting out on a great note!  It’s Colorado Cowboy Poetry Gathering time.  Hope you will drop by and say Hi! if you are at the Gathering.

2009 was a great year as well.   I was honored when my latest CD, ROADS to COLORADO received the 2009 Will Rogers Cowboy Award for “Best Western Album” from the Academy of Western Artists. It’s got 12  songs, and a poem I wrote with Doris Daley.  All the great guitar tracks are done by the fabulous Mike Dowling!  www.mikedowling.com The title cut is the great song written by Michael Fleming of New West.

2 new CDs in progress! A Western Swing project with my good friend, fabulous fiddler, Ron Jones is one CD. It’s coming along, and we’ll let you know when it’s done!    I’m also working on another album of cowgirl songs and yodeling!

“Sweethearts in Carhartts” I’m working with Jean Prescott and Yvonne Hollenbeck! This is a fun show of poetry, music and collaborations about Ranch Women!   We’ve been well-received at some festivals, are ready to roll!    For bookings:  Jean at 325-583-2553   www.jeanprescott.com

Liz Masterson and the Cactus Crooners – yes, I started this group in 1984, and we’re alive and kickin’ with Western Swing for all occasions!

Corn Beef Wranglers – Cowboy Music with a Celtic Twist!  I’m enjoying playing with this new band that includes Julia Hays and Ron Jones on fiddle and Rock Eggen on accordion and tin whistle.  We’ve had some nice concerts and festivals this year, and looking forward to St. Patrick’s Day!

Music of the Civil War – I’ve got a show for schools and cultural centers with Rex Rideout. He is a great old-time musician, plays a variety of instruments and is a walking historian.

Liz Masterson Solo - As much as I love collaborations with my musical friends, I also love the simplicity of working alone.   I’m continuing and expanding a variety of programs.

Happy New Year 2010!

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

2009 was a year of many new projects!   Each of these will eventually have their own pages, but for now, here’s what I’ve been up to!

My CD “Roads to Colorado” is finished and getting rave reviews!  It’s got 12 songs and a poem!  The theme is “Songs of a Gypsy Homesteader” … the push and pull of traveling and staying home!  All the great rhythm guitar tracks are done by the fabulous, Grammy Award winner, Mike Dowling! The title cut is the great song written by Michael Fleming of New West.

2 new CDs in progress! A Western Swing project with my good friend, fabulous fiddler, Ron Jones. It’s coming along, and we’ll let you know when it’s done!   I’m working another traveling cowgirl CD!

“Sweethearts in Carhartts” I’m working with Jean Prescott and Yvonne Hollenbeck! This is a fun show of poetry, music and collaborations about Ranch Women!   We’ve been well-received at some festivals, are ready to roll!    For bookings:  Jean at 325-583-2553

Discovery Channel’s MYTHBUSTERS I was delighted to fly to Telluride, CO and see if my yodeling would start an avalanche!    You’ll have to watch the episode to see what happens.

Music of the Civil War – I’m reworking this show for schools and cultural centers with Rex Rideout. He is a great old-time musician, plays a variety of instruments and is a walking historian. We’re ready to play for your school, museum or Red Hat Society!

Liz Masterson Solo - As much as I love collaborations with my musical friends, I also love the simplicity of working alone.   I’m continuing and expanding a variety of programs.  I especially st enjoy working as an Artist-in-Residence.

Liz Masterson and Sean Blackburn I will always treasure my 18 years with the incredible Sean Blackburn and miss him terribly.  I still hear from people who are just learning of Sean’s death, Sept 29, 2005.  It’s been a long, hard recovery for all of us who loved him.   I am so grateful to all my wonderful friends and colleagues who have encouraged me to keep moving.

Liz just returned from Garland, Texas for the Academy of Western Artists (AWA) Award ceremony.  Roads to Colorado, Liz’s latest CD won Western Album of the Year.  Liz is joined by her friend and Grammy award winning guitarist, Mike Dowling.
